Everything You Want to Know
📚 About Our Work
What does Global Literacy Support do?
We bring books, teacher training, and digital learning tools to underserved communities worldwide. Our programs focus on communities that have no access to books, trained teachers, or schools. We work in 22 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Where does Global Literacy Support work?
We have programs in Sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Rwanda, Malawi), South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cambodia, Philippines), Latin America (Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua), and our headquarters in France.
How do you choose which communities to serve?
We never start a program without an invitation. Communities or local organizations contact us with a request. We visit, listen, and conduct a simple assessment together. If we can help, we design a program that fits the local context. We prioritize communities with the greatest need and least access to existing literacy resources.
What languages are your books in?
We prioritize books in local languages because children learn best in their mother tongue. Our books are available in more than 35 languages, including Swahili, Hindi, Nepali, Bengali, Khmer, Spanish, Quechua, French, Arabic, and many more. We work with local authors and illustrators whenever possible.
🙋 Getting Involved
How can I volunteer with Global Literacy Support?
There are many ways to volunteer. You can become a reading tutor, help sort and pack books at our distribution centers, translate materials into local languages, assist with administrative tasks, or become a Literacy Ambassador in your community. Visit our Get Involved page for details or contact us directly.
Do I need experience to volunteer?
No. Many volunteer roles require no prior experience. We provide training for all positions. If you have professional skills in teaching, communications, technology, or operations, we have specialized roles for you as well. Everyone is welcome.
Can I volunteer remotely?
Yes. Remote volunteers help with translation, graphic design, research, data entry, and other tasks that can be done from anywhere. We also have remote Literacy Ambassador roles. Contact us to discuss how your skills can be used remotely.
How do I become a partner organization?
We welcome partnerships with schools, libraries, foundations, corporations, and other nonprofits. Please use our contact form and select "Partnership Opportunity" as the subject. Tell us about your organization and how you would like to collaborate. We will respond within three business days.
Can my school or library host a book drive?
Absolutely. We provide step-by-step guides, promotional flyers, and shipping labels for book drives. Contact our book donation coordinator at books@globalliteracysupport.org to get started. We accept new and gently used children's books, early readers, and young adult novels.
📖 Programs & Impact
How many people has Global Literacy Support reached?
Since our founding in 2010, we have distributed more than 1.2 million books, trained over 8,400 teachers, built 412 community libraries, and reached more than 95,000 girls through our literacy programs. Our adult literacy classes have served over 62,000 adults.
How do you measure success?
We track both outputs (books distributed, teachers trained) and outcomes (children who learn to read, teachers who change their practices). Every program includes pre- and post-assessments. We follow communities for years to understand lasting change. Our results are shared openly in annual reports.
Do you work with governments?
Yes. We partner with Ministries of Education in Kenya, Nepal, Guatemala, and Senegal to align our programs with national education strategies. We also work with local government officials to ensure our programs are integrated into existing school systems wherever possible.
📦 Books & Materials
What kinds of books do you need?
We need children's picture books (ages 3–8), early reader chapter books (ages 6–10), young adult fiction, dictionaries, and educational workbooks. Books in languages other than English — especially French, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Bengali, and Arabic — are particularly valuable. Books should be new or gently used with no damage.
Do you accept textbooks?
We accept textbooks that are less than ten years old and still contain accurate information. Outdated textbooks are not useful to students. Please contact us before sending textbooks so we can confirm current needs.
Where can I send book donations?
Please email books@globalliteracysupport.org for current shipping instructions. Our distribution centers are located in France, Kenya, India, and Guatemala. We will direct you to the closest location to minimize shipping costs.
🌍 General Questions
Is Global Literacy Support a registered nonprofit?

How is Global Literacy Support funded?
We are supported by individual volunteers, partner organizations, foundations, and grants from literacy-focused institutions. Our financial statements are audited annually and available upon request.
